This statue of Saint John by Salvador Dali is in the entrance area of Alicante’s Town hall (Plaza del Ayuntamiento, 1, 03002 Alicante, Spain), just by the stairs. It is dated from 1973.

Sketching on the beach in Alicante

It's not always easy to find a good block of time to sketch. Going to the beach with the family gave me ample time to draw. The other advantage is that there are plenty of people around and nobody seems to bother if you are sketching.

You have to be quick and there are times when people will move. It will happen, and in this case I just start a new sketch (on the same page if the first one is not too advanced, like below). The trick is to start by drawing the people first and then the objects that are less likely to move.

For speed and freshness, I draw directly with the ink liner, without any pencil outline.

You can click on each of the pictures to enlarge it.

Hope II by Gustav Klimt - MoMA in New-York

Hope II (Oil, gold and platinum on canvas - 110.5 x 110.5 cm) by Gustav Klimt

Hope II (detail)

Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) was an Austrian painter. He worked in Vienna which was also home to Sigmund Freud. The topic is complex with the pregnant woman, the skull, and three women at her feet.

Klimt’s technique combines tradition (Byzantine gold leaf painting) and modernism with very ornate organic patterns and a rich palette.

Shaun in the City - Bristol

This is becoming a tradition in Bristol (England). After a trail of Gromit sculptures in 2013 that helped to raise £5 million for Bristol Children’s Hospital, there is a new art trail of 70 giant painted sculptures of Shaun the Sheep, another character created by Aardman.

The sheep, each sponsored by a company, have been decorated by celebrities and designers and dotted around the City. You can see them until the 31th August.

At the end of the summer, they will be auctioned to raise money for sick children in hospitals across the UK.
Last week-end, I had the chance to see a few.
